The study corridor spans approximately 48 miles of SR-1, a scenic highway that is also characterized by complex geometric challenges, due to its close proximity to cliffs and water, diverse terrains, and sharp horizontal curves, which contribute to safety risks.

As a member of a project team, ETG assisted Caltrans District 4 with the State Route 1 (SR-1) Safety Improvements project in San Mateo County, California.

Based on the collision data analysis, together with a geometric review, we identified a total of 14 focus locations.

We conducted a field visit of the study corridor, with videos recorded while driving along the corridor, and made stops at the 14 identified focus locations for detailed field reviews, capturing extensive photographs and documenting cross streets where applicable.

We supported the identification of potential safety improvements for each focus location and preparation of the Highway Safety Improvements Report.
